In order to explore whether artificial intelligence has an enabling effect on the development level of new quality productivity, based on panel data spanning from 2012 to 2022, encompassing 30 provincial-level administrative regions in China, this paper empirically examines the effect of artificial intelligence on new quality productivity, the intermediary function of industrial structure enhancement and the mitigating influence of innovation. environment by using the two-way fixed effect model, mediating effect, moderating effect and threshold effect. Benchmark regression shows that AI can significantly improve the level of productivity of new qualities. This conclusion remains strong even after undergoing robustness checks and addressing potential endogeneity issues. The results of the intermediary effect test show that the upgrading of industrial structure plays a partial mediating role in the process of artificial intelligence empowering new quality productivity. The moderating effect analysis shows that the innovation environment plays a positive moderating role in the relationship between artificial intelligence and new quality productivity. The threshold effect shows that when the innovation environment exceeds the threshold value, the moderating effect is more significant.
